Interval Training…

When I first lost a great deal of weight I lost the last 30 lbs by way of treadmill. I had downloaded a greatmp3 off the apple store. It was an interval training session with Alberto Salazar. Before I started using it I hadn’t noticed much improvement, yet I had been jogging between 20-30 minutes at a time.

It wasn’t until I had that little mp3 file that I began to improve. I quickly learned that interval training is a key tool that athletes use to improve their stamina and speed. The pounds melted away while at the same time I was running faster than I had ever run before… often to the point where I’d draw stares from other gym members.

I am no where near that level anymore. I’m over 200 lbs, but I feel pretty healthy. I have just began a pretty intensive weight training routine and I plan to work in some cardio as well. That’s where the interval training is going to come in.

It’s important to note that before you even begin interval training you should be in decent shape. For example if you’re going to be cycling and doing interval training I’ve read that I should have about 500 kms of road behind me. I’m not exactly sure just how many km you should have when running, but I think it’s fair to say that you should be able to run comfortably for 20 minutes or more before you begin this type of training…. but then again, what do I know? This is just my opinion… I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv.

Interval training is broadly defined as repetitions of high-speed/intensity work followed by periods of rest or low activity.

Do your homework before you begin, you don’t want to do more harm than good. One of the major things I learned is that often people don’t go slow enough after the high intensity period. It’s important that you bring your heart rate back down to a level one… once you’ve achieved that then you can begin the next set. If your heart rate isn’t slowing down after a great deal of time, you’ve overworked yourself and it’s time to hit the showers.

If you’re at the gym, start your interval training on the bike. It’s easier to shift between high and low intensity, and you don’t have to worry about falling off the treadmill and going through any walls.

correction: The file I downloaded wasn’t coached by Alberto, it was Jay Blahnik. I realized I made this mistake this morning when I went out for a run. Please forgive me….

Fat doesn’t make you fat…

I have been reading a lot about healthy living, and one of the most interesting things I came across that might surprise people is that fat doesn’t make us fat. At least not in moderation… if you eat anything excessively it’ll make you fat, and that’s because of the calorie intake.

Fat can actually be good for you! It’s true, especially a fat known as Omega-3. It’s a type of essential fatty acid that has been linked to helping heart disease, stroke, and high blood preasure.

I’d suggest reading up on the good fats, as well as the bad ones… fatso 😛

How I got fat

  1. Eating at my desk – At my worst, I was over 250 lbs and eating at work was probably one of the main causes of my obesity. Add to that it wasn’t carrot sticks but rather fried chicken and fries… and you’ve just become a candidate for heart disease and diabetes.
  2. mmmm beer – It’s no secret, I love beer… right now, it’s not something I drink every day, or week… or sometimes month. I used to drink it fairly often and in numerous amounts. This is bad, alcohol not only kills your brain cells, but it also kills your mid-section.
  3. Exercise just isn’t for me – When I was big, and a candidate for diabetes; exercise wasn’t even on my radar. However I started slow. Walking 30 minutes a day, then jogging a little, then a lot, then cycling… pretty soon I entered my first triathlon. Not to compete, but to complete… and I did it, even at 210 lbs. Exercise is for everyone.
  4. Fast Food Joints – They are evil… yes they taste good, but they’re killing you. High in everything that isn’t good for you, with huge portions just isn’t good. Even the “healthy” menu can be bad for you. Salads are fine, but think about the dressing!
  5. Eat Breakfast Growing up my dad would always say “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” The thing about that is, he’s right. Your body hasn’t had any food for 8 hours or so, right when you wake up you need something to jump start your system.
  6. Stress – Again it ties in with work. When I was stressed out, I ate something bad. Fries smothered in gravey, cheese burgers, fried chicken… Find something that’ll relax you

Get confident!

Confidence is something that a lot of people lack. I was once a guy who had none of it, but I’ve learned a few things in my late twenties… here are just a few tips

  • You’re one hot piece of… – I lost a ton of weight and finally began to attract women. I was able to flirt without getting pepper sprayed, thus I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t fugly. Confidence boost!
  • Take care of yourself – Hygiene is important, not only for your looks but for your health as well. Don’t skimp on sleep, exercise 3 times a week, and eat well.
  • Discover your interests and dive in! – If you have no interests, fined something as soon as possible. If you don’t have interests, lets face it, you’re not interesting.
  • Be yourself – Don’t be a fake, people can see right through that. If people don’t like you, fine, don’t worry about it… they’re entitled to their opinion…
  • Grow some balls – This goes for both men and women. Having the courage to say no goes a long way.

Excuses that just don’t cut it.

When you’re just starting out, working out can be difficult. We make up excuses and for the most part, they’re not valid ones.

I’m too tired! I know this one very well. I used to use it a lot but lately I’ve found it to be BS. Why? Well for starters I have a desk job, why should I be physically tired? Once I hit the weights or jump on my bike and mash the pedals I soon realize I’m full of energy and feel 100X better once I’m done.

My workout clothes are dirty. Grab another t-shirt and shorts and move it!

The gym is too crowded. Go outside and run, walk, swim… you don’t have to get your workout inside the gym

My water broke. OOOOO cry me a river, get out there and run around the block a few times!

I can’t find my mp3 player. Good, maybe this time you’ll be able to focus on what your doing. More than likely if you’re listening to music your technique probably sucks.

I have to let my food digest. Okay, lets wait an hour or two then…. now what’s your excuse?

Not enough hours in the day. Taking care of yourself is just as important as that lunch meeting or that conference call.

I need a personal trainer to tell me what to do. No you don’t, if you don’t know how to use certain machines, don’t be afraid to ask another person who is between sets. Just don’t talk to them when they’re in the middle of lifting… unless you want to die.

Unhealth related: Bacon

Bacon is not the most healthy food in the world. In fact, one might not even say it is… healthy. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon bacon cups. Not Martha shows you exactly how to make cups made out of bacon. Why? My guess is no balance out the salad with something that’ll kill you.

This lead me to wonder what other artery clogging goodness people have come up with involving bacon.

  • Canned Bacon – Now I have not tried it, nor will I ever but I could only imagine this as tasting like a treeplanters ass after spending 6 weeks without a shower.
  • Bacon Soap – The smell of bacon is kind of nice every once in awhile. When you wake up early in the morning to the smell of bacon, it makes one think of home. Smelling like bacon 24/7 makes one think of heart attacks.
  • Bacon Ice Cream – Nothing says refreshing on a hot day like a salty bowl of ice cream!
  • Bacon Jam – Remember when you wanted to have a peanut butter, jam, and bacon sandwich but just didn’t have the time? Well your problems are over!
  • Bacon Candy – Gummie Bacon and bacon flavoured suckers will mold your kids into the morbidly obese adults you’ve always wanted them to be!
  • Bacon and chocolate chip cookie – It is really hard to have an open mind… this is just getting ridiculous!
